Piera Detassis nasce a Trento e si laurea in Storia e critica del cinema con Giampiero Brunetta, presentando una tesi sull’estetica cinematografica di Galvano della Volpe. Prosegue la sua formazione a Parigi con una borsa di studio in storia e critica del cinema. Debutta nel giornalismo negli anni Ottanta, scrivendo per L’Arena, L’Unità, Il Manifesto e testate come Cinema & Cinema, Positif e Alfabeta.
Dal 1997 al 2019 dirige il mensile Ciak, rilanciando il Premio Ciak d’Oro e promuovendo eventi legati al brand. Per vent’anni (1994–2014) è critico cinematografico per Panorama. Ha ricoperto ruoli di vertice in istituzioni culturali: responsabile delle attività cinematografiche del Comune di Modena (1985–1988), direttrice artistica del Festival del Cinema di Tavolara (1990–2023), coordinatrice di Maestri alla Reggia a Caserta.
Per la Festa del Cinema di Roma è stata direttrice della sezione Premiere (2006–2008) e direttrice artistica (2008–2011), Presidente della Fondazione Cinema per Roma dal 2015 al 2018. Ha collaborato con la Fondazione Carla Fendi per Spoleto e curato retrospettive internazionali, tra cui 20 Italian Leading Ladies per Cinecittà.
Autrice di numerosi volumi, tra cui Sequenza Segreta (Feltrinelli), Alain Tanner (Il Castoro), Il cinema di Antonio Pietrangeli (Marsilio) e Caro Diario curato con Nanni Moretti. Ha lavorato al restauro di Gruppo di famiglia in un interno di Visconti e curato il libro Sophia, dedicato a Loren, per il Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. Nel 2017 ha realizzato per la Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna di Roma la serie “Nel profondo dell’immagine”.
Dal 2019 è Editor at Large Cinema & Entertainment del gruppo Hearst Italia. Dal 2018 presiede la Fondazione Accademia del Cinema Italiano e alla guida dei Premi David di Donatello anche come Direttrice Artistica, introducendo riforme che hanno rafforzato il dialogo tra industria e creativi in particolare con progetti innovativi come Becoming Maestre realizzato in collaborazione con Netflix. Tra i riconoscimenti ricevuti: il Premiolino, il Biagio Agnes e il Sergio Amidei.
Piera Detassis was born in Trento and graduated in History and Film Criticism under Giampiero Brunetta, with a thesis on the cinematic aesthetics of Galvano della Volpe. She continued her education in Paris with a scholarship in film history and criticism. She began her journalistic career in the 1980s, writing for L’Arena, L’Unità, Il Manifesto and publications such as Cinema & Cinema, Positif and Alfabeta.
From 1997 to 2019 she edited the monthly magazine Ciak, relaunching the Ciak d’Oro Award and promoting events connected with the brand. For twenty years, from 1994 to 2014, she was film critic for Panorama. She has held leading roles in cultural institutions, serving as Head of Film Activities for the Municipality of Modena from 1985 to 1988, Artistic Director of the Tavolara Film Festival from 1990 to 2023, and coordinator of Maestri alla Reggia in Caserta.
For the Rome Film Fest, she was Director of the Premiere section from 2006 to 2008 and Artistic Director from 2008 to 2011. She was President of the Fondazione Cinema per Roma from 2015 to 2018. She has collaborated with the Fondazione Carla Fendi for Spoleto and curated international retrospectives, including 20 Italian Leading Ladies for Cinecittà.
She is the author of numerous books, including Sequenza Segreta published by Feltrinelli, Alain Tanner published by Il Castoro, Il cinema di Antonio Pietrangeli published by Marsilio, and Caro Diario, edited with Nanni Moretti. She worked on the restoration of Visconti’s Conversation Piece and edited Sophia, a book dedicated to Sophia Loren, for the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. In 2017, she created the series Nel profondo dell’immagine for the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.
Since 2019 she has been Editor at Large Cinema & Entertainment for Hearst Italia. Since 2018 she has chaired the Fondazione Accademia del Cinema Italiano and has led the David di Donatello Awards, also as Artistic Director, introducing reforms that have strengthened the dialogue between the film industry and creative professionals, particularly through innovative projects such as Becoming Maestre, developed in collaboration with Netflix.
Among the awards she has received are the Premiolino, the Biagio Agnes Award and the Sergio Amidei Award.
